PennAITech Awards Grant to BrainCheck to Fund the Development of an AI-Driven Chatbot to Navigate Cognitive Care Plan for Persons with AD/ADRD

March 20, 2025 – Austin, Texas – BrainCheck, a leading innovator in digital cognitive health solutions, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a pilot grant from the Penn Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory for Healthy Aging (PennAITech). This grant, part of PennAITech’s recent $2.37 million funding initiative,1 will support BrainCheck’s development of an AI-driven chatbot designed to assist individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) in navigating their cognitive care plans.

With cognitive decline affecting millions of individuals and early detection being critical to improving patient outcomes, BrainCheck’s platform provides a comprehensive solution. Offering accurate cognitive assessments from any device, at any time, and from anywhere, BrainCheck ensures that clinicians and caregivers are equipped with the tools to detect impairment early and take immediate action.

In 2019, BrainCheck introduced the pioneering computerized cognitive care planning (CCP) tool, BrainCheck Plan. BrainCheck Plan streamlines the assessment of patients’ and caregivers’ care needs and automates the generation of personalized cognitive care plans, thus improving the accessibility of CCP to benefit more patients. To date, 93 clinics across the US are using BrainCheck Plan, and 23,379 care plans have been generated.

Although providers can review care plans with patients and caregivers during visits,2 there remains a critical gap in continuous support for patients and caregivers beyond the clinical setting. The AI-driven chatbot will extend cognitive care into the home, providing real-time, AI-powered assistance to help individuals adhere to their care plans, access relevant resources, and receive timely guidance between clinical visits.

“We are thrilled to partner with PennAITech to develop AI-driven solutions that bridge the gap between clinical visits and everyday life for those living with cognitive impairment,” said Mary Patterson, Vice President of Clinical Operations at BrainCheck. “By integrating AI into cognitive care, we can provide patients and caregivers with accessible, real-time support, ensuring that critical care guidance extends beyond the walls of the clinic.”

Dr. George Demiris, Co-Principal Investigator of PennAITech, underscored the importance of AI in enhancing aging and dementia care. “We fund a broad spectrum of approaches, technologies and systems that foster innovation. We are looking forward to working with all our awardees to create new solutions for aging.”1

This collaboration marks an important step toward leveraging AI to bridge critical care gaps for individuals living with cognitive impairment. By utilizing innovative digital tools, BrainCheck and PennAITech—alongside key collaborators Co-PI Katherine Britt, PhD, MSN (University of Iowa), Co-I Xiao Luo, PhD (Oklahoma State University), and Co-I Rebecca T. Brown, MD, MPH (Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania)—are focused on improving the accessibility and effectiveness of dementia care. This partnership underscores the growing role of technology in addressing the increasing demand for scalable, personalized healthcare solutions, ensuring that individuals with cognitive decline receive the continuous support they need anytime, anywhere.

BrainCheck has been awarded a portion of the $2.37 million grant funding, which will be dedicated to developing the AI-driven chatbot for cognitive care.
