Who can bill the assessments?
The following questions were submitted during our webinar, Billing & Coding Update: 2019 Psychological and Neuropsychological Testing Codes, on June 4, 2019.
1. Which professionals can bill for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 96132 (for test interpretation and feedback)?
The official description of CPT code 96132 states:
“Neuropsychological testing evaluation services by physician or other qualified health care professional, including integration of patient data, interpretation of standardized test results and clinical data, clinical decision making, treatment planning and report, and interactive feedback to the patient, family member(s) or caregiver(s), when performed; first hour”
The definition of qualified health care professional (QHP) may vary by payer, particularly commercial carriers and Managed Medicare or Managed Medicaid plans.
Physicians and clinical psychologists are routinely covered, as well as mid-level practitioners in many instances. It is good practice to ask for Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) or Medical Policy documentation from your primary payers to find the information most relevant to your practice.
2. Can licensed professional counselors or clinical social workers be classified as “Technicians”?
We have not seen specific language regarding the background for technicians. BrainCheck does offer substantial orientation and training in test administration in the onboarding process to bring technicians up to competence.
